Singer Elton John, 65, is recuperating from a nasty respiratory infection that began last weekend.  He’s cancelled three of his Las Vegas shows and checked into a Los Angeles hospital for treatment.

Elton John, 65, revealed his drug habit was once so severe, he's lucky he didn't suffer the same fate as Whitney Houston.

Elton John dedicated a song to the late Whitney Houston during his Million Dollar Piano show at Caesars Palace in Vegas last night.

Before the performance, he spoke about Houston's unique talent and spirit.

"She could sing gospel, she could sing, "I Will Always Love You," and make you cry, and she was the most beautiful woman I think I've ever seen. She was incredible. So, my dearest, gorgeous, lovely angel, we want to do this song for you. Thank you for giving us your talent and one of the most beautiful voices I've ever heard in my life."

In part two of "Extra's" exclusive interview with Simon Cowell, the "X Factor" creator told our Terri Seymour his plan of attack for competing this fall in what may be the same time slot as NBC's "The Voice."

"If I'm right, 'The Voice' is now going to compete with us in the fall. You have to rethink things even more than we were a couple of weeks ago... 'cause now it's war."
