The Olympic swimming torch has been passed from Michael Phelps to Ryan Lochte.

Lochte won the gold medal in the Men's 400m Individual Medley race, the first gold for the U.S. so far, with Phelps finishing fourth.

Phelps has 16 Olympic medals to his name and holds the all-time record for most gold Olympic medals, 14, and the record for most gold medals in individual events with nine.
