If Ann Curry Leaves 'Today' – Who Should Take Her Place?
Ann Curry is reportedly on her way out as co-host on the “Today” show. The news hit the web Wednesday afternoon, rumored to be the result of low ratings, according to the New York Times.
“It’s hard not to take it personally," Ann told Ladies' Home Journal of the ratings. "You worry, am I not good enough? Am I not what people need? Am I asking the right questions? When people say negative things or speculate, you can’t help but feel hurt. I know NBC pays my salary but I have never doubted who I work for. I think about the people who watch. They’re the ones who matter to me. I want to feel I haven’t dropped the ball when it comes to them.”
The shakedown could mean a new job at NBC for the 55-year-old. She recently hired attorney Robert B. Barton to help with the talks. He’s the same lawyer who represented Christiane Amanpour as she transitioned from ABC News’ “This Week” to a foreign correspondent role for the network.
Ideally, Curry would like to stay with "Today." She told LHJ, “I’ve been at Today for 15 years and I’d love to make it to 20. I think eventually I want to become a teacher, like my father wanted to be, and hopefully positively influence the next generation.”
It seems the job, anchoring side-by-side with Matt Lauer, is already up for grabs. TMZ reports that NBC tried to woo back Meredith Vieira with a big contract, but she turned it down. Ann’s usual sub, Savannah Guthrie, is also a rumored replacement.
Curry’s fans rushed to show their support on Thursday, when mid-show, she tweeted, “Good morning twitterverse.”

Unfortunately, I just don't think Ann is what the people want for that role on the Today Show. She is a good field coorespondant and I know she has done some great things and should stick to those. Savannah, is not a good selection either. She has a legal background and is great with the experts/professional panel, but not co-anchor. I think Natalie Morales should be Matt's co-anchor. She seems to have it all; brains, beauty, appeal to the masses. I really like watching her segments and she has this likability about her that I think a lot of people are drawn to.
It's really nothing against anyone else or Ann directly, I just think Natalie or heck, even bring back Meredith if she would accept it again. Either one of those ladies are great in my book.
Ann Curry is one of the few women on that show that actually has credibility. Watching the silliness at times is just wasting my time. IF I watch the news in the morning, it's to actually GET the news, not watch silliness and lots of humor. Some humor is fine, but I really just want world and national news first thing in the morning! Ann has the right balance of seriousness, credibility, and exudes honest reporting on any topic. NBC needs to look at what they have, and figure out what exactly their viewers are wanting during the morning news.
Often, it just gets turned off, as it can't be distracting to our morning routines, so someone like Ann is great for morning news. Fresh, honest, and tells the story with integrity.
If they want a Charlie Sheen type, I'll forget to watch news in the morning!!! :-)
Its not Ann Curry's fault the ratings are down. Cant be the top news station forever. Another one of NBC'S idiotic stir up just to get ratings using Ann Curry.
Ann is GREAT. I love her integrity & compassionate nature. The first 3 hours of today is still good. The only complaint I have is that they need to allow sufficient time for the segments. They rush through things so quickly that it makes me feel that it was useless to have put off other things to see what the 'teasers' have been leading up to. They are going to cut it off in the middle anyway.
The 4th hour is a different matter. I have no interest in watching alcoholics at 10 AM. I won't even watch Dateline anymore if Hoda is hosting. I have lost all respect for her. I switch to MSNBC at 10AM.
Ann should have been given the co-host spot before Meredith Vierra, now again she is being given the shaft. The biggest mistake the Today Show made was bringing in the horrible Sarah Palin for that stunt hosting gig. I changed over to GMA that day. I only tune in to Today occasionally to check on Ann, once she is gone....I will be watching GMA 100% of the time.
the ratings are not ann currys fault, they should keep and pay her more on her new contract and keep her and matt. they make a good team and should stay together foe a couple more years. i think ann curry is irraplaceble as far as i'm concerned. they should renew her contract and keep ann a few more years at the very least until they find an appropriate replacement
Ann Curry is genuine and smart and a huge asset to the show. She has been all over the world and covered dangerous assignments and brings a lot of knowledge to the show. It is too bad that ratings cause a great journalist to be ousted. Maybe it is Matt Lauer who had the problem.
Ann Curry is intelligent and a good news anchor. She appears to be a very well rounded person and would hate to see her go but there does seem to be a lack of chemistry. Not her fault, just the way it is.
Good heavens...PLEASE DO NOT put Savannah Guthrie in there. I'd hate to have to change my viewership after all these years.
