Actor Robert Redford as Michael Corleone in “The Godfather”? It could have happened -- if it weren’t for the color of his hair.

“Extra’s” Jerry Penacoli sat down with Redford for an exclusive chat in Mexico's Mayan Riviera, where Jerry told Redford that producer Robert Evans once pushed for him to get the part of Michael Corleone, even though he had blonde hair.

“I didn’t know that,” laughed Redford. “All I knew is he fought very hard to keep me out of ‘The Great Gatsby’ because he thought I had blonde hair.”

These days, the 75-year-old is busy on a new indie project with Shia LaBeouf called “The Company You Keep,” about a former activist on the run from a journalist.

Said Robert, “There was no budget. I guess I’m eating my own lunch so to speak. I supported independent film, now that’s what I’m doing.”

Redford also commented on President Obama’s support of gay marriage. “I think it’s great,” Redford said. “I think he was absolutely right. We are a country blessed with freedoms and we should honor them.”
