The Extra List: Top 10 Man vs. Nature Movies

January 29, 2012 Movies

With "The Grey" coming in No. 1 at the box office this weekend -- which finds Liam Neeson and a group of guys stuck in the frozen Alaskan wilderness, being hunted by a pack of wolves -- "Extra" is counting down 10 of the best man vs. nature flicks to grace the big screen.

Top 10 Man vs. Nature Movies

10. 'Jaws'

Three guys against a man-eating shark - guess who wins?

9. 'The Mist'

A freak storm unleashes enlarged - and blood-thirsty-- creatures on a small town, where a small band of citizens hole-up in a supermarket and fight for their lives. It's not pretty.

8. 'Deep Impact'

Those darn meteors! There probably won't be any chance of survival is one biggie hits Earth.

7. 'Grizzly Man'

This Werner Herzog documentary follows real-life Timothy Treadwell, a grizzly bear activist who spends several years living with the animals - but is eventually killed by one. They are wild, after all.

6. 'Earthquake!'

This classic disaster flick shows just what will happen if the Big One ever hits Los Angeles.

5. 'Dante's Peak'

And if you think earthquakes are bad, how about trying to survive an exploding volcano in a small, mountain town. Yeah, it's not easy.

4. 'Twister'

But wait, there are also tornados! In this crazy man vs. nature flick, the people actually chase them.

3. 'The Perfect Storm'

In this true story heart-tugger, the fishermen have no intention of chasing the perfect storm, but are unfortunately caught in it on the open seas.

2. '2012'

Yep, it's coming... the end of the Earth, brought on by the inner core heating up.

1. 'The Day After Tomorrow'

Similar in theme to "2012," this is just a fantastic environmental meltdown disaster movie. I mean, it doesn't get any better than running from freezing ice.
