Leno went up against longtime rival David Letterman, taking the lead with close to six million viewers -- double Letterman's three million.

The "Tonight Show" debuted with big names; Olympic gold medalist Lindsey Vonn, country singer Brad Paisley and actor/singer Jamie Foxx, who celebrated Leno's return by spraying the audience with champagne.

The two hosts battle it out again tonight when Leno welcomes former Alaska Governor Sarah Palin and Letterman has former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney.
