MTV Speaks Out About Physical Fight on 'Jersey Shore'

December 10, 2009 Television

There was already concern about MTV's new show "Jersey Shore" and the stereotype of Italian-Americans, but next week's show takes it to another level.

Cast member Nicole "Snooki" Polizzi gets sucker-punched by a male at a bar while the cameras were rolling. MTV has released a statement about the footage.

"This particular scene is obviously extremely disturbing, what happened to Snooki was a crime. As we do with any sensitive issues, we will provide information at the end of the show and on MTV.com."

The network confirms the male was arrested that night and taken into custody.

MTV will also run a domestic violence PSA after the episode airs.

National Teen Dating Abuse Helpline's Sheryl Cates also released a statement condoning MTV's decision to air the scene. "We applaud MTV for partnering with us to provide resources and help to members of their audience who may be experiencing violence in their relationships or lives."
