"Walk the Line" star Joaquin Phoenix displayed impressive chops in the Johnny Cash flick -- but is the actor now trying to pursue rapping?

That's true. Phoenix debuted his hip-hop skills in Sin City over the weekend -- part of his whole "I'm retiring from acting" shtick.

Phoenix broke news to "Extra" that he was quitting acting to pursue a music career, but brother-in-law Casey Affleck has been filming Joaquin's musical excursions for a "documentary."
