'Grey's Anatomy' Doc Joins Cancer Battle

February 26, 2007 Grey's Anatomy

Patrick “McDreamy” Dempsey plays an doctor on the hit show “Grey’s Anatomy,” and now he’s using his star power to fight a noble cause.

Dempsey is joining forces with Breakaway from Cancer, a support initiative founded in 2005, to help navigate the needs of loved ones facing cancer.

“It’s overwhelming because there are too many options sometimes. You feel very naïve and childlike in lots of ways,” Dempsey confessed in an interview with George Stephanopoulos broadcast Sunday on ABC’s “This Week.” “You have to give over a lot of power to these people who may not understand what your needs are because of the volume of work they’re going through.”

Dempsey knows firsthand the complexity of issues that a cancer patient faces. His mother successfully completed treatment and has been cancer-free for nine years.
